Four Wheeled,  Second Class
Open Saloon Coach
PROTOTYPE. The North Eastern Railway built these coaches in the 1880s as diagram 61 for chartering by private families and groups. Typically one or more of these coaches would be chartered by a local Sunday School or miners welfare society for a day trip to the seaside.
The saloon coach would then be attached to the rear of appropriate scheduled passenger trains to make its journey to the seaside.

The coach with its occupants enjoying a right good time and seated on the saloon benches around central picnic tables would be shunted at junctions from one train to another to make its way to the desired destination.

Just before the First World War many of these types of coaches were sold out of service to independent light railways and collieries for use as Paddy Trains transporting miners to the pithead.
